Prince Harry has called for more people to consider studying engineering in order to help Britain remain one of the leading countries in the world for its motorsport sector.
Earlier this week, the prince met with students at Silverstone University Technical College for the launch of construction of the Silverstone Experience.
Proud of Britain’s achievements in this sector, he urged more youngsters to consider careers in this industry, stating: “Unless we encourage more young people to study science, technology, engineering and maths it will be impossible for us to continue to lead in this field.”
The Silverstone Experience will be an exhibition allowing visitors to learn the history of motor racing in the UK and how influential the country is in the sector today.
Prince Harry said the experience will appeal to children when it opens in spring 2019, thereby encouraging them to consider careers for UK mechanical engineering companies in the future.
“I’m sure it will help to engage children in engineering by making that all important connection between their textbooks and the insight into the thrills of motorsport,” the 33-year-old remarked.
The project will be held inside a former Wellington bomber hangar on the grounds of Silverstone, the home of Formula One. It will cost £19.3 million when completed, and is expected to draw in more than 500,000 visitors a year.
Among those will be youngsters who the prince hopes will be inspired by the famous vehicles that will be on display here. Motors that Prince Harry saw during his visit included a 1948 Formula One racing car and a Mercedes model that will feature in this year’s world championship.
In addition to this, fans will be able to access motor sports records, learn about racing history, and discover the innovative engineering that has been responsible for Britain’s success on the track.
