Precision-Fabricated Sheet Metal and Plate Work by Holdens Engineering
Holdens Engineering offers high-quality sheet metal and plate work services to clients across the UK’s industrial, construction, utilities, and infrastructure sectors. With decades of experience and a fully equipped fabrication facility, we support projects that require precision-formed, cut, welded and assembled components in mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium, and specialist alloys. From complex fabricated panels and housings to structural base plates, ducting, guards, covers, and enclosures, our sheet metal and plate work solutions are custom-built to meet exact project specifications. Every item is manufactured under our ISO 9001:2015 certified quality system, ensuring consistency, traceability, and compliance with industry standards.
Whether it’s a one-off fabrication or part of a high-volume production run, Holdens delivers accuracy, repeatability, and quality—backed by a team of experienced fabricators and engineers who understand the performance and finish requirements of sheet metal products in demanding environments.
Complete In-House Fabrication Capability
Our facility in Lancashire is designed to handle a wide range of sheet and plate sizes and thicknesses, supporting everything from lightweight panels to thick structural plate components. We use a combination of manual and CNC-controlled equipment for cutting, forming, folding, and assembly—ensuring accuracy and efficiency at every stage.
Our in-house capabilities include:
- Guillotining and CNC plasma cutting
- Brake pressing and sheet folding
- MIG, TIG and spot welding
- Drilling, tapping, notching and countersinking
- Edge dressing, finishing and deburring
- Assembly and fitting of hinges, louvres, handles and fasteners
This range of processes allows us to produce sheet metal and plate fabrications suitable for structural applications, protective housings, internal enclosures, and finished architectural components.
Sheet Metal Components Built for Industry
Holdens Engineering supplies sheet metal and plate work to suit a wide range of industrial and commercial requirements. We fabricate bespoke items for integration into mechanical, electrical, HVAC, process, and plant systems—ranging from simple brackets and covers to complex fabricated assemblies with multiple components and fixings.
Common products include:
- Protective guards and machine enclosures
- Electrical control cabinets and switchboard housings
- Access panels, covers and mounting plates
- Ventilation ductwork and flanged transitions
- Structural base plates and equipment mounting panels
- Custom trays, tanks, chutes, and hoppers
- Skid plates and structural inserts for heavy plant
Each item is designed and manufactured to withstand the environmental conditions and loads of its intended application. We can apply additional stiffening, reinforcement, or corrosion protection based on customer specifications and site demands.
Working with a Range of Materials
We regularly fabricate in a variety of metals to meet performance, durability and compliance requirements. These include:
- Mild steel – ideal for general structural and industrial use, easy to weld and finish
- Stainless steel (grades 304, 316, 316L) – used for corrosive environments, hygienic applications and food processing
- Aluminium – lightweight and corrosion resistant, used in transport, marine and access systems
- Galvanised steel – pre-treated for external applications, with additional coating options available
- High-strength and abrasion-resistant steels – for demanding environments such as material handling or wear applications
Material thickness ranges from 1mm sheet to heavy plate up to 25mm and above, with all materials traceable to EN 10204 3.1 certification where required.
We have qualified weld procedures and coding in place for welding carbon steel plate up to 100mm thick. This capability allows us to undertake heavy-duty fabrication projects requiring thick-section welding, including high-stress applications and structural components with significant load-bearing demands.
Our team can advise on the best material selection based on performance requirements, expected wear, environmental conditions, and project budget.
CNC Profiling and Accuracy
To achieve precision in complex geometries or high-volume production runs, Holdens utilises CNC profiling methods including plasma and flame cutting. This ensures consistent accuracy for items such as flanged panels, bracket sets, mountings, and cut-outs.
Tight tolerances can be maintained across matching components, reducing the need for rework and ensuring smoother fit-up during on-site assembly. Profiles can be produced from CAD drawings, DXF files, or customer sketches with dimensions. Where required, we also offer laser cutting through trusted partners to support intricate detail, fine edge finishes, or ultra-tight tolerances.
Forming, Folding and Assembly
Sheet metal forming is a key part of our service, with a range of press brakes and folding equipment allowing us to create panels, frames, channels, and structural angles. Our experienced fabricators take into account bend allowances, material spring-back, and forming tolerances to ensure accurate results. Bends and folds can be incorporated into the design to increase structural stiffness or create easy-to-fit flanges and mating faces. Additional operations such as drilling, tapping, and notching are performed to prepare each component for final fit-out or site installation.
We also assemble sheet metal products using standard fixings, rivets, studs, gaskets and hinges. Our team handles small, detailed parts as well as larger welded or bolted assemblies.
Welding and Finishing
Welding is a core element of our fabrication work, and our welders are certified to carry out TIG and MIG welding across a range of metals and thicknesses. Whether it’s a fine TIG weld on a stainless enclosure or heavy-duty MIG joints for plate structures, we apply the right process for the application. We also provide surface finishing and preparation for coatings, including edge dressing, cleaning, deburring, and priming. Final finishes can include:
- Zinc-rich priming and paint systems
- Powder coating in various RAL colours
- Polishing or bead blasting for stainless steel
- Galvanising for structural and outdoor applications
All coatings are applied to manufacturer specifications with inspection records available on request.
Quality Assurance and Compliance
Every item fabricated at Holdens Engineering is subject to quality control checks at key stages, including dimensional inspection, visual weld assessment, and functional verification where applicable. For regulated environments, we provide full documentation including:
- Material certificates
- Weld maps and welder qualifications
- Paint and coating records
- Inspection and test reports
- Delivery and packing notes
Our ISO 9001:2015 quality system supports complete traceability and audit readiness, giving our clients confidence in the integrity of every product we supply.
