Two projects designed to further the UK’s aerospace industry have received funding, it has been revealed.
Aerospace minister Richard Harrington revealed that £10.7 million of government money will go towards the Rolls-Royce led projects in a visit to the company’s Derby facility on 17 May.
The Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) and Rolls-Royce are jointly funding the two projects, one of which will work on developing new cooling systems for aeroplane engines, and the other of which will focus on developing cutting-edge technology to prevent the formation of ice crystals on engines when they’re cruising at high altitudes.
Mr Harrington commented: “These two projects will see the best talent from the industry come together to help the UK reach even greater heights in aerospace excellence.”
These projects will see the country’s best talent from business and academia working together to solve the issues outlined above.
In total, it’s estimated that these two projects are worth £21 million, with Rolls-Royce welcoming the support provided by the government. Chief technology officer at the company Paul Stein said that these projects will “play an important role in developing the innovative technologies needed to enhance performance, improve efficiency and reduce emissions of future aircraft”.
This is all part of the government’s Industrial Strategy, which named four grand challenges when it was unveiled last year. These were clean growth, future of mobility, ageing society and growing the Artificial Intelligence and data-driven economy.
