If you haven’t heard of it before, ‘Get Up To Speed’ is an event looking to encourage youngsters to learn about engineering – everything from general manufacturing to oil and gas engineering – and this year, it’s back again for the 8th time.
The event, which takes place in Rotherham at the Magna Science Adventure Centre, is proving to be more popular than ever amongst schools and educational institutions with over 61 schools and 2,000 tickets booked to attend.
It will interactively showcase the best science and technology in engineering and manufacturing to young people, parents and teachers who can get hands on and build valuable knowledge. The event is fundamentally driven by employers wanting younger generations to get excited about the work they carry out and encourage them to continue their studies in STEM subjects. You’ll be sure to find some well-known names exhibiting when attending such as Yamazaki Mazak UK, Rolls Royce, Tinsley Bridge and McLaren Automotive to name a few.
There will also be some great companies sponsoring this year’s event, Liberty Speciality Steels, Santander and Elevation Recruitment Group and the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Companies understand the importance of educating and promoting the industry not just in the UK, but internationally too as it’s estimated that around 186,000 skilled recruits will be needed each year between now and 2024 to fulfil a skills shortage in the sector.
The Workwise Foundation organises with local and national businesses to attend the event with apprentices and graduates who can speak with school groups, talking to them about the industry and their experiences, while giving valuable information on how to begin a career in the science, technology, engineering and manufacturing fields of work.
